Meadow of Flowers was developed by the British around a meadow on the northern flank of Pir Panjal Range at an altitude of 8,950 ft. Its golf course is one of the highest in the world and around it are fairy-tale cottages with pine forests behind them. Gulmarg's legendary beauty, prime location and proximity to Srinagar make it a premier hill resort in the India. Its present name was given by Sultan Yusuf Shah, who was inspired by grassy slopes with wild flowers. Gulmarg was favorite haunt of Emperor Jahangir who once collected 21 different varieties of flowers from here.
